National Junior Honor Society
SPRING 2012 APPLICATION
Walter Reed is pleased to announce the formation of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Reed. The ideals of scholarship, character, service, citizenship and leadership will be the focal point of this membership club. The Reed chapter of the NJHS was granted in June 2010.

Eligibility Requirements are:
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (6th, 7th and 8th grade) are eligible for consideration.
- Criterion also includes demonstration of service, leadership, citizenship and character.
- Service of school, classmates, community as well as attitude toward service will be considered. Outside activities related to scouts, religious groups, volunteer service for elderly, poor and disadvantaged are examples.
- Leadership roles in both school and community will be considered and may include: Offices held, elected positions, captains, section leaders, committee chairs, etc…
- Students who demonstrate citizenship understand the importance of civic involvement, have a high regard for freedom and justice, and respect laws.
- The Honor Society supports and recommends the use of a multifaceted definition of character known as the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship define a person of character. School records will be reviewed to demonstrate an outstanding record of conduct and behavior. Candidates may have no marks of “U” for work habits and/or cooperation on final report cards.
- Students eligibility lists based on scholarship will be posted in the counseling office after fall semester grades are verified.
- A Faculty Council selects membership after eligible students complete “student activity information forms” for consideration.
- Deadlines must be adhered to for consideration. Meeting deadlines is a reflection of a student’s level of responsibility.
- Selected candidates are notified and participate in a formal induction ceremony.
- After official induction, members commit to chapter dues, meetings, school projects and maintaining the standards that were used as a basis for their selection.
- Chapters elect officers who along with the chapter advisor plan and conduct all meetings.
